2015 Viluko Vineyards Estate Grown Chardonnay

2015 Viluko Vineyards Estate Grown Chardonnay

Barely four acres of chardonnay are nestled in one of our coolest spots, a gentle rising slope above Mark West Creek. This site sits at the lowest elevation of all our blocks and is planted to a selection of Robert Young which originated from the old Wente Vineyard. Our second release is elegant, restrained and belies the notion of a California Chardonnay.

About This Wine:
Our chardonnay is a classic expression of the variety, both subtle and elegant. The aromas of toasted cashew, green apple, and asian pear overlay wet stone and toasted brioche. Subtle hints of green cardamon pod and toasted hazelnut complement the mineral palate, bright but not tart acidity, finishing with just the faintest scent of lemon curd. Drink now and over the next couple of years.

Production Notes:

Our lowest elevation vineyard blocks are planted to Chardonnay. Our vineyard was plated to a selection of Robert Young Chardonnay, originating from the old Wente vineyard. Despite our best efforts, frost damage reduced our crop by about 50% in this our second vintage of Chardonnay, which yielded again less than ½ ton per acre. The fruit was hand harvested in September. The whole clusters were delivered direct to press, where the juice was pressed away from the skins and held briefly in tank. The juice and all its lees were moved to new and used French oak barrels where it underwent alcoholic fermentation. After primary the new wine was stirred twice monthly for six months during malolactic fermentation, then continued to age on the gross lees with monthly stirring for another year. Early stirring adds layers of richness and nuance, and long aging allows for subtle integration of lees and wood characters into the wine.
